We share "lots" of directories on our network and we are all part of the
same domain/workgroup... What worries me is that I don't see ANYTHING, let
alone the particular server/directory I want to work with...

Ken,

I would start by verifying that the external server has the appropriate
directory shared. Then check that the user profile on the AS/400 matches
something on the external server or that public has appropriate
authorities. While you may need to tinker with profiles later, it makes
sense to me to create someone with explicit authority for testing.

Also, do your domain/workgroup names match between NetServer and the
external server?

 Subject: QNTC

I'm trying to access an external server via the QNTC directory in the
IFS...

Using WRKLNK all I see is this:

Opt Object link Type
      . DDIR
      .. DDIR

The Netserver server is started and I'm able to access directories on my
AS/400 from my PC.

Could anyone suggest some possible trouble shooting steps for me to try?

Kenneth
