Actually, there are three:

1. Simple (a single based-on physical)

2. Multi-format (two or more based-on physicals, with separate record
formats in a common key sequence)

3. Joined (a single composite record format tying together related
records from two or more based-on physicals)

And that's not counting whatever types of logical files are unique to SQL.
