Maybe I misunderstood what he wanted to occur.  If a signed edit code is
used which does not hide the sign then an extra character is added to the
field which cannot have data entered into it other than a minus sign.  Is
this not what he wanted to occur?  AFAIK this is an extra position in the
field, it doesn't change the number of editable digits or replace any
existing digits...
