That setting has nothing to do with if you have a firewall.

It simply tells the SMTP server to use the mail router
speicified (and IMHO is a terrible name for that parm...)

If you can't ping yahoo or anything from your AS/400, and
you're not using a mail router, that could be the issue. 

You need to use CFGTCP option 12 to enter DNS servers so
you can resolve domain names (and thus find MX records for
recipients for your email).

But, if you HAVE a mail router, you SHOULD be using it.
