What device must be predefined in SST/DST? The alternate console name or
the PC name that will use the LAN console? How many predefined LAN
console
names can you have? I know you can have a primary and a alternate
console.
Is this different with LAN console?

To use LanConsole you use the OPS Console function of iSeries Access.
During the setup process on the PC you define the name of that PC for this
function, very much like assigning a device name for a regular 5250
session in iSeries Access. As to the number of consoles you could have
defined, I don't know the MAX but there is room for lots. Primary and
Alternate console goes back to Twinax or ASCII console days and depended
on which slot and which port a device was attached and doesn't really
apply for LanConsole on a non-LPAR'd system i5. Althought I guess you
could have a OPSConsole as back in case the ethernet port went out.

I assume this "super secret id/password" is stored in a file on the PC
and
if this file is missing or doesn't match the PC, the system rejects the
connection?

You are correct. There is a way via the iSeries to 'reset' it so it can
build a new one if say the PC crashes a disk and you had to rebuild it.

Re: small i5 recommendations

Kirk,

I would like to clarify a couple of things you stated.

When setting up LanConsole a couple of things happen
#1 The device must predefined in SST/DST (this is by name). The only
one
predefined is QCONSOLE

#2 The first time a predefined console attaches a super secret id/pwd
is
created and stored on the PC that only the system knows. If another device
with the same name
tries to attach, it can't.

Thanks for your help.
