Jim, Win2k would not be problem. I was running it with v5r4 of client access till recently. There's lots of shops running Win2k instead of XP. If they don't have a spare PC around, consider buying a new one. I'd be willing to bet that you can get something for close to the price of the thin console. If you're looking to give a modern impression, nothing say modern like being able to tie in from home. Consider the impression an ultra small form factor PC would make as a console. As odd as it sounds, a new thin client does not give the same perception. Also no spare pc's, no spare anything. Also no net tech. Users are mostly in the elderly range and it's a place people, even families work for life.... Not tech or pc savvy. This is why they want to keep their rpgii application! Change is NOT good (to them), but will gently push as many new features and ideas as possible. Existing pc's are Win2k and I do have a fear of problems with such an old Win version. I'm basically setting this up and turning over to another developer, so reviewing options with him. jim ----- Original Message ----- From: "Larry Bolhuis" <lbolhuis@xxxxxxxxxx> To: "Midrange Systems Technical Discussion" <midrange-l@xxxxxxxxxxxx> Sent: Thursday, August 24, 2006 10:15 PM Subject: Re: small i5 recommendationsIf your only consideration is acquisition cost then I have an old 5291-002 for sale freekin cheap. Kinda dirty..... I look at value (which incidentally is why i use */i/* Yes a windoze machine may cost a few bucks but it's likelythat you havean old machine around that nobody really wants any longerthat is plentyfor this task. You may also have a KVM in the DC to connectit to so nokeyboard, rodent, or display need be purchased either. The software required is provided with i5/OS. When you consider that every single time you need to todedicated systemstuff with my old 5291-002 you need to be in front of itwhile with theOps Console solution you may save yourself several trips tothe officeover it's life. Therefore I maintain that the ops consolesolution islong term cheaper than el dumbo. Very much like your */i/* is long term be cheaper than Windoze servers. - Larry Raul A. Small i5 = LAN Console. Or you could do LAN console. Orif you prefer,LAN console. There is also LAN console. Or in a pinch, I'd try LAN console. Nothing to buy nothing to install on the System i. The required software comes with the machine and works findon any Win2K orWinXP or Win2003 server; OK It's not supported on Serverbut it worksfine.
