But allocating the queue itself *doesn't* work, hence your original post. 
Your thought of the short-duration lock had occured to me too.  What you 
really want is a way to tell if the program reading the queue is still 
active.  There are a variety of ways to do that.  It also depends on how 
fast you need a solution.  If you submit a DCR it could take awhile and 
they still may not implement it in a way that suits your needs.  Are there 
any data queue API's that come close to doing what you want?
