Vern, Thanks for the info, I do have some experience using LinkSYS I will look into this John -----Original Message----- From: midrange-l-bounces+rallen=drvtech.com@xxxxxxxxxxxx [mailto:midrange-l-bounces+rallen=drvtech.com@xxxxxxxxxxxx] On Behalf Of Vernon Hamberg Sent: Saturday, March 17, 2007 4:23 PM To: Midrange Systems Technical Discussion Subject: RE: Attempting to map a drive from home to AS/400 IFS directory Allen At another job we got a LinkSys VPN router - it could handle up to 70 connections, if I recall correctly. Setup on the router was pretty easy. It went inside our DSL modem, and we had a block of fixed IP addresses. There were extensive step-by-step instructions for setting up a client - no additional software needed - it involved security profiles or something - It was also possible to get a VPN router for home use that worked automagically with the one at work. But CISCO owns LinkSys now, so who knows what is happening there. HTH VErn At 02:23 PM 3/15/2007, you wrote:
Thinks for all the info so far. This sounds like it is not a simple project. I am going to have to do some reading on this topic before jumping into a VPN I do not want to have to hire a Network guy to maintain the VPN -----Original Message----- From: midrange-l-bounces@xxxxxxxxxxxx [mailto:midrange-l-bounces@xxxxxxxxxxxx] On Behalf Of Josh Diggs Sent: Thursday, March 15, 2007 4:13 PM To: Midrange Systems Technical Discussion Subject: RE: Attempting to map a drive from home to AS/400 IFS directory For a quick and dirty VPN solution, I've had success with purchasing a pair of low end consumer grade VPN routers.
In
my limited experience, it is much easier to configure similar settings on both ends of the connection than to try to match settings in disparate products. Another consequence of this approach is that you're connection can be set to be always available. This is good for ease of use, but bad for security. A more secure and ultimately better solution is to use a more robust firewall/VPN package whether appliance or software based. What you probably want to shop for is something that uses a modern encryption method, and does
not
take a network engineer to set up and maintain. -----Original Message----- From: midrange-l-bounces@xxxxxxxxxxxx [mailto:midrange-l-bounces@xxxxxxxxxxxx]On Behalf Of Allen Sent: Thursday, March 15, 2007 12:40 PM To: 'Midrange Systems Technical Discussion' Subject: RE: Attempting to map a drive from home to AS/400 IFS directory Currently our ISP is Bellsouth (DSL Business Account) In the past we have not really done anything remotely so we have just been using the Standard Netopia router with a
Dell
Switch for accessing the internet and sending emails. In the past we have not had any need to access our servers or our iSeries or AS/400's. But starting this year we would like have remote access but at the same time we do not want to open our network up

hacked. If we need to purchase some equipment such as firewall/vpn appliance or Router etc. then that is possible. Do you have a Cisco router/firewall? If so, I believe the VPN software is included with the hardware. Allen wrote:Sounds like I may need to contract this out. Some ISPs don't enable VPN for personal accounts, but instead want to charge for a 'business' account or at least charge for enabling it. Setting up VPN will be _far_ more difficult if the ISP blocks it and you don't realize it. (I'd add a "<g>" but it really canbesomething that doesn't bring a smile.)
