2008/6/26 Ingvaldson, Scott <scott.ingvaldson@xxxxxxxxxx>:
I know that in the past a dedicated optical drive was required for each
LPAR; is this still the case? It seems odd to me that this requirement
is kept for hardware that could potentially only be used once in the
lifetime of a system.

Hi Scott

We've never had a dedicated optical drive for each LPAR, either on a
previous i825 or the current i550. We have just the one that's
switchable and move it between LPARs using Ops Nav or the HMC. We also
use a switchable tape library, which we move using SSH to run scripts
on the HMC, driven from CL commands[1] on the System i - the optical
could be controlled the same way but we hardly every need it moved so
I haven't bothered as yet ;)
