With the Power 5 and previous hardware I would lean toward dedicated
drives for end-user simplicity. Now with Power 6 we can accomplish the
direct usage of an optical drive through the virtual SCSI adapters.

At my last job we had BPs configure an LPARed system for us and all
three insisted that it needed to have a dedicated optical drive for each
LPAR. Here, we already had an LPARed system when I started, and it has
an internal DVD-Rom and two stand-alones. Each dedicated to an LPAR and
I haven't touched any of them in nine months!

system is required and it can be switched between LPARs as needed. This

LPAR Optical requirement
I know that in the past a dedicated optical drive was required for each
LPAR; is this still the case? It seems odd to me that this requirement
is kept for hardware that could potentially only be used once in the
lifetime of a system.
