yet another telling story to the Java programmers that access data on the
system the jt400 library still uses as400.(whatever) classes, etc. it's
hard to tell them it's not an as400 when all they interact with is
"as400.(whatever)" i agree Trevor that we should "market"/advocate this
as "IBM i on Power systems" but IBM is making it hard to do when the folks
that aren't versed in how the OS has evolved can't see any definitive
difference from their interactions with the system. if nothing else IBM
could introduce different naming for these and leave those as deprecated
classes, etc.

IBM apparently doesn't think i is particularly different from i5/OS. In
fact, the V6R1 Information Center still calls it i5/OS. As of this month
IBM still has not even bothered to search/replace i5/OS with i (see the
Memo to Users:

).
FTM, Info Center still calls the hardware System i when they should be
using Power Systems. According to the i home page at
http://www-03.ibm.com/systems/i/, "Power Systems including AS/400,
iSeries, and System i", Power Systems is the appropriate name for all
server hardware running i, and by inference, i5/OS and OS/400.
It's hard to believe the products are new/different when the vendor
refuses to use the right names on a consistent basis.
And if I were exploring the i OS and Power Systems hardware for the first
time, I would be horribly confused.

If people do think that IBM simply changed the name, then we have little
hope for the platform.
I was discussing what the current perception is, and that *is* what
people think. When you talk to people at conferences, user groups,
forums, etc, do you find that they think IBM changed the technology and
then changed the name to match? Or do you find that they consider
"System i the new name for iSeries. and iSeries the new name for AS/400"?
I think it would be wonderful if everyone thought that IBM i was
technologically miles ahead of i5/OS, which in turn was miles ahead of
OS/400. But that's not a reality today. The bulk of the community
considers them new names for the same thing.
