integration, right ? 
That's my understanding.  But the nature of integration has changed, significantly.  It used to mean very tight integration under a native virtual machine.  Now it means server consolidation and homogenization.  The server now supports 3-4 operating systems, a native virtual machine, a unix virtual machine (PASE), a java virtual machine.  Even Net.Data and PHP provide something of a virtual machine for their respective scripting languages.
I think the lack of an integrated simple GUI ... is just another nail
in the coffin ...
Well, maybe there's a little bit of Steve Richter in all of us.  I seem to recall an old prophecy about the US Constitution hanging by a thread, but revived by saints.  Maybe the native virtual machine will hang by a thread but be revived by RPG programmers <smile>
