Rule one: Do SAVE 21 Now.
Rule two: DO NOT Power off with a failed load source disk.Even with RAID 
it will not IPL

To answer your question you can do exactly as you say. Yes you will need 
to move a new disk to the LS slot which is not slot one it's P2-D3 which 
is the 3rd slot from the RIGHT side on a 520. You will also have to 
format all the disks due to the failed RAID set then start RAID over. 
With a failed LS disk there is no way to remove a drive from the ASP and 
the replace the LS disk with that one. (Now I have not tried this since 
V5R2 but it flat did NOT work then!)

Despite that there just has to be a used 4326 in Britain somewhere cheap 
and that would absolutely be my first course of action!
