You were spot on. I created another user profile limiting it to 8 characters and could generate the key pair without any problems.
Bothers me because I even mentioned to the programmer working with this client that we should usually limit the profile name to 8 characters to avoid "weird" problems, but I allowed him to do 9 characters anyway.
