But Larry, didn't he call the previous systems by their names, and he
referred to the current system by its current name?

In reference to DOS, you should not call it DOS. In reference to Windows,
however, you should not call it DOS?

My users group had the pleasure of having Steve Will speak at our last

iSeries
AS/400
Silverlake (my favorite all along)

What Steve did, however, because he can recall all of this, is call the
systems as he referred to the systems functionality at specific periods
of time. So when he referred to the midrange system from about 12 years
ago, he referred to iSeries. Amazing how he can keep track of it all in
his mind.
He was an exceptional speaker by the way, and if anyone wants to see what
the Power system is doing now and in the future, I strongly suggest you
get your local user group to try and get Steve to speak to them.

Getting off topic with the naming thing...

But when we upgraded to a Power 7, I made sure everyone knew the new box
was a Power box (running IBM i). I was worried they'd say, "Whatever,
it's an iSeries." Instead they said, "Power is right!" and "I'll call it
whatever you want me to call it, just don't take it away. It's fast!"

Leveraging the performance impact of a hardware upgrade seems like the
perfect time to get the non-tech people at your company on board with the
naming change, at least from my backyard experience.

When a school teaches RPG and CL, who knows what box they're using. I
mean, across the world, I'm betting there are shops teaching on an
iSeries, maybe an AS/400, and quite possibly a Power system (or maybe on
another box name - I'm not positive I have the naming straight). So -
how do you refer to these boxes en masse? I guess Midrange would be the
word?

DRsquare,

You are like the grumpy old grandfather who doesn't get out much. He sees
the world in his own neighborhood, and has to tell the kids that is how
the entire world really is. And a smiley face does not make it right.
Maybe to him that is the whole world, but outside in the real world, the
use of the new IBM branding is a little more common than your backyard.
Mainly because there are people out here who are up to date, and not
living in some fabulous past. I.T. is a little faster moving than AS/400
pundits wished, but it has moved far beyond that glorious platform.

The point is not the name, but the concept. Windows can still run DOS,
but you don't call it DOS. AS/400 could run S/34, S/36 but you never
called it by those names. IBM i on Power is what you buy from IBM, and
while it can run OS/400 applications, it just is not an AS/400. Besides,
you cannot run Watson on an AS/400, and what a powerful marketing tool
that is for our platform - and yes, IBM does market this platform. Maybe
they stopped marketing the AS/400 when they stopped selling the AS/400.

For your benefit, IBM built a new platform called Power Systems. They
sell the best business hardware platform on the planet - Power Systems.
It runs IBM i. Calling it by another name - an old name or your own
particular made-up brand, is simply incorrect and pandering to the
naysayers and competitors who call you old and out of date.

Certainly, there are people running on AS/400 servers with OS/400. There
are iSeries customers running OS/400 and IBM i. There are System i
customers running i5/OS and IBM i. And yes, they often struggle with the
"name". However, the next box they will upgrade to will be a Power
Systems server, running IBM i. If you tell them they have to keep using
the same "400", they may be happy for a short time to avoid having to
face change, but in the fast paced world of I.T. you would be best served
to offer them something modern.

Coming to you from the real world.
Trevor

CLEARLY someone it out of touch with what's REALLY going on in industry

INEPT attempts at marketing, this box is known IN INDUSTRY by several
names. If someone has a problem with that, I suggest they get back on
their meds...or complain at IBM for their TOTALLY INEPT marketing
practices and product naming conventions.

Rob,

The OP did not ask. The message to which I replied offered it.

The OP didn't even ask for AS/400. They asked for IBMi/iSeries. For
this, IBM does offer training. See some of my earlier emails.

IBM does not provide AS/400 training any more..

The IBM Academic Initiative has curriculum for colleges that is IBM i
and Power Systems Related. See here for details:
https://www.ibm.com/developerworks/university/academicinitiative/

And, the list is much much longer than "hardly any":

There are also some colleges still teaching. I think the one I went
to
in
northern Illinois cancelled their courses, But I know Gateway tech in
south eastern Wisconsin still teaches courses.
