Yes, you may reduce the slowness of "physical" disk arms. But lately I am
hearing the virtues of virtual disk arms also. For example one 10TB SSD
(not that such an animal exists) may not have the performance of numerous
physical disk drives. In my context, one large NWSSTG drive would be
better served by multiple smaller NWSSTG drives.
In your example, I suspect their time trials were involving a single use
machine. Because in a multiple user machine who stays on one database?
For example, I am reading my itemmaster sequentially. It's scattered
across numerous drives. And the same time I am reading that 200 other
users are accessing 200 other files so the disk arms are always jumping.
We have to design for outside of the lab.
