Gee, I thought we were supposed to reply off-list, which I did. But, since
the thread goes on, I'll tell you what I told Joel: I promote whenever I
feel like it. I only have one box (V5R1 at that), but I have separate test
libraries for programs and data, as well as test profiles. I don't have a
CMS, like MKS, but I set things up in Project libraries with routines to
push to Test or Production. I'm the only programmer here so I have the
luxury (and disability) of being my own tester (though I oftentimes call on
users to help or verify). Like Nathan, I try to get these things into
production as soon as reasonably possible. The longest that I remember
knocking people off of the system is ten [10] minutes.

I agree with that. However I occasionally hear programmers reproachfully
saying that they're missing a separate machine (virtual or real) for
development. That's not a big problem to me. Use separate libraries and
library lists. Limit authority to production libraries and objects. Have
formal procedures for moving changes into production libraries that adopt
appropriate authorities.
