Well, it seems to me that if the users are connecting via TN5250 (and/or
other IP-based protocols), and you copy all their accounts to the new
box before switching IP addresses, it should be completely seamless.
When we finally retired the 510-with-sidecar (V4R5) that we'd obtained
as barter, in favor of our new E4A (V6), we copied all of the active
user profiles over, then moved our "production" IP address to the new
box, and re-IPL'd, and promptly (and seamlessly) everything that
formerly accessed the 510 started accessing the E4A instead.
