I came to AJS as a newbie last year, when I wrote a 3-course series for
Manta. I used the 7.2 manual, which is available online.

IBM has been adding new features. In particular, the most current
version uses the web console, and there are features in there that are
not available in the green-screen or Navigator for i versions. The
current manual covers the graphic interfaces, but does not go back to
the green screen. I had to use the Version 4 manual for that. To
cover everything, I wound up devoting one course to the concepts, one to
the green-screen version, and one to the web console version.
AJS seems popular. We got our best first-day sales ever.
