Most often, IBM tries to not invent the wheel a second time. So, RDi might really stem from there. Without knowledge of both programs, I can't tell similarities, though.

My attempts to guess how vendors come up with names is often fruitless. :)

That's because names are often created by marketing to sound good and "worth the bucks", while techs like us don't care for fancy names but need to know if the product holds up to the expectations from marketing promises. ;-)
