You can run the save with/without stopping to prompt for each command. You can change the compression at that time.
This option, 20. Define save system and user data defaults, does not allow you to override the compression. But it does override whether or not to stop and prompt for commands.

But I believe you are right in assuming that the default is not to use compression.
