Duty manager finally got someone to call me back.
I had downloaded from the ibm site to a directory on IBM i. Then I used the get upgrade from the hmc to the IBM i site. Even though the byte size is exact the support guy says my download must be corrupt and that is what he sees (or guesses) is the issue each time this happens. He has no clue how to do a checksum on either IBM i, nor on the HMC after the get upgrade.
He had me use vmware to restart the session and it hung again on the log in.
He says I'm <expletive deleted>. He suggests that I download the new version of HMC directly and scratch install.
Of course the steps had me run a save upgrade data but not a Backup Critical Console data so guess what I do not have.
