1 - ding, ding, ding. Geographic redundancy.
2 - I did end up restoring from IBM Spectrum Protect.

Running this now:
getupgfiles -h public.dhe.ibm.com -u anonymous --passwd anonymous -d /software/server/hmc/network/v950/x86
bypassing the IBM i as a ftp site.

There is a column called BSD Checksum at the website https://www.ibm.com/support/pages/node/6372280
Now if I could figure out how to check that on the hmc after the getupgfiles is done.
