'$1' means put the contents of capture group 1 in that place.

Caret '^' means anchor at the beginning ... so that would require the 
characters be at the start of the contents being evaluated.

The expression Steve posted should replace any upper or lower case 
alphabetic characters with nothing.

FWIW: I've found the site https://regex101.com to be very useful.
