At any rate, from what I gathered so far, I'm leaning towards finding and operations cable first, that sounds like the safest option.

I was looking for information about LAN console and 170 models, as I am quite sure that, unfortunately, it does not apply. But, I have found the original IBM documentation about Operations Console which applies to a 170. The book reference is SC41-5508.
