Gavin,

you can perform your Option 21 to an Image Catalog, but as Jim has mentioned, you cannot recover from it.

Remember, Option 21 is something you run from outside of your OS.

But you can use different approaches to recover from there, depending on your scenario :

1) You can run a tape out (DUPTAP to Tape cartridge) to recover from a physical tape.

2) If you need to recover remotely (Cloud, lights out DC or remote DC), you can use a "cloud approach":

    * Save an Option 22 + QGPL and QUSRSYS to an OPTICAL IMAGE CATALOG and send it to a NAS or auxiliary IBM i
    * Save the data with Option 23 to a TAPE IMAGE CATALOG, and send the "cartridges" to a NAS server
    * When you need to recover:

. Copy the OPT22 Optical Images to an Auxiliary IBM i
. Set the NFS and TFTP server as on this document: IBM i - RESTORE your LPAR from NFS
<https://www.linkedin.com/pulse/ibm-i-restore-your-lpar-from-nfs-diego-kesselman/>        . Once you have recovered your system run a RSTLIB for QGPL and QUSRSYS
        . Start the FTP server
. Transfer the Virtual Tape Cartridges
        . Recover your Option 23

If you need more details I suggest to read the "IBM Power Systems Virtual Server Guide for IBM i <https://www.redbooks.ibm.com/abstracts/sg248513.html>" RedBook.

Good luck!

Yes, but you won’t be able to boot from it for a full recovery.
Individual objects sure but not the LIC and OS. You would need to export
that tape image to a real tape, or have a different way to recover the OS
and the image catalog.

I've never attempted it, but it is possible to do a Full system save to
a Tape Image Catalog? (Omitting the IFS directory where the image
catalog resides of course).

If the image catalog is setup and loaded, will it still be available
after going to a restricted state?
