Did you copy the entire disk to an image, or just the partition?

Any chance the thinkpad had a specialized boot partition that boots BEFORE Windows boots?

It might be worth trying to install Windows from scratch, then restore the image.

I've used the copy of Ghost that Symantec includes with Norton System Works Pro multiple times to image my laptop to the network and restore without a problem afterwards.
