I would have to say that you need to try them out and see how they work for YOU. People's experience with them varies. Don't shoot them down just because they may handle things different from IE and Outlook. One of my biggest gripes in life is when people compare the Outlook GUI to the Lotus Notes GUI. Once most people get over the differences between the two, they find out that Notes is hands down more powerful than Outlook(my 2 cents worth). With that here are some of my thoughts.

Thunderbird:
* No need to worry about all those attacks written for Outlook.
* Extensions - Add the stuff you want. I added the calendar one.
* Spam control - Have not played much with this. I do believe it learns from you marking things as spam. I have marked a few things and Thunderbird seems to handle them from then on.
* Multiple POP accounts - My thunderbird is currently set-up with 5 different pop accounts each one with its own outgoing smtp setting.
* Handles newsgroups.
* Rules work great for putting incoming mail in different sub-folders.

Firefox:
* Great browser!
* Tabbed Browsing
* Extensions - Adblock, Google bar, Sage(RRS), WeatherFox, ieview, and on and
on.

And why stop there. Check out OpenOffice.org! * Handles all/most MS Office file formats. * Its file formats are A LOT smaller than MS Offices. * Can export to PDF.

Hi group,

I have seen a lot of mails and discussions about people switching to Internet Explorer and Outlook Express to Mozilla Firefox and Thunderbird.

Can anybody confirm that these alternatives are indeed as good (if not better) as the M$ products, and that all settings, mails, cookies, rules and so forth are taken over as they are now. The built-in RSS reader seems very interesting.

For fighting spam, I now use K9, but I noticed that Thunderbird also has built-in spam control. Has anybody tried this, and is willing to share his/her experience?

If the programs prove to be as good, I'm considering switching not only my own, but also both the kids' pc's, provided there's a version in Dutch of course.

Thanks in advance.
