It's a laptop Vern - so the whole unit plugs in/out.  It reads CDs and DVDs
just fine - and as I noted it "sees" blank CDs (it is programmed to bring up
the CD creation utility when a blank is inserted).  I moved the drive to my
wife's machine and it works just fine.

One thing I didn't mention earlier is that my Sony MD player which connects
via USB cannot record either, so I suspect some base driver issue with
Win2000.
