Those of us who don't like to re-write our apps every time Micro$oft gets an
itch could be considered a community of sorts... Microsoft does some things
right, and I see a role for them in our organization for some time - just a
slightly diminishing role...

Is there a Great Divide looming? Is Microsoft going to
create a huge, ponderous, but pervasive computing environment
where a majority of large firms and small use nothing but
Microsoft computing software?

Is there a community of any size developing that, in one way
or another, does not have the Microsoft logo on their premises?

I sure wouldn't call it "thriving" on the client side.
Perhaps server
side it is going strong and I painted to broad a brush.

Pretty much every platform has a thriving client-side Java
community. You
might want to wander over to SourceForge to check that out.
 Just as an
example, let's take, say, the most popular IDE other than
(arguably) Visual
Studio. It's Eclipse!

Not sure what your definition of thriving is, but Java is
everywhere, from
mainframes to micro devices.
