One of my colleagues is familiar with Ubuntu (he prefers Kubuntu) and he
just told me the same thing. I'll check it out when I get home tonight.

Also have a look at http://ubuntuguide.org/ which takes you through
installing a lot of commonly used applications. Some aren't in the
standard set (called main) of Ubuntu packages, so you have to enable
extra software repositories (universe, multiverse) in the update
system - the guide takes you through the steps. You'll find you can
enable these through the Add/Remove... item - there is a huge amount
of software available.
