I run my mail on a VMWare appliance that I built myself. It was actually a pretty interesting process. And now, I can back up my mail server by just copying the VMWare instance (although as David Gibbs pointed out to me, it's still a good idea to back up the mail as well, because that way if the VMWare backup instance gets corrupted, you still have mail).

Your prior posts got me interested in virtualization and appliances.
While VMWare is probably the most popular, I been looking at Xen

There are some compelling arguments for using VMWare (stability and reputation being two), but once my entire environment is stabilized (and man is it going to be cool <grin>), then I will begin researching other options. The idea of an open source hypervisor for my open source software has a lot of obvious appeal.

I'll tell you this: with the exception of a couple of things (RDi being the particular thorn), I'm very close to being able to go to an entirely non-Microsoft desktop environment. I realize I'm being a bit of a heretic by moving to open source before getting rid of Windows, but it's a reasonable migration path and one I would suggest for any companies looking to get out from under Microsoft's oppressive licensing and privacy practices.
