On Unix, data is traditionally copied to the clipboard automatically when you highlight it with the mouse. (No need to hit ctrl-C) And data is pasted by clicking the middle mouse button (on a 3-button mouse)

Since Ctrl-C isn't (traditionally) used to paste on Unix, I doubt that's where it originated.
