For what it;s worth, many of these key combinations were established before the invention of the mouse and were the result of a need being answered by techies who were not very good keyboarders.

I always set my own keyboard map as well. To this day, when I am working in
a display session I still set my keyboard to use the 5251-11 style usage
where the PC enter keys acts as field exit, and the right Ctrl is the Enter
key. It just feels like the "natural" thing to do when in a green screen.
But then I also modify the keyboard map to have many PC centric key combos
like Ctrl+right/left to move a word at a time so go figure...
