I've never had a problem with this, even though I like to figure out why things were done that way.

C for copy makes sense
X for cut makes sense

So what else around those 2 makes sense for paste? Not Z - I suppose V was handy.

But this is all idle speculation - I have a feeling the decision is buried somewhere in development history.

FWIW, what I was originally told was the V, aside from proximity to C and X,
was supposed to be reminiscent of the proof-readers markup for inserting
text, which is an upside down v (or more correctly, the caret symbol).
Thankfully they did not use Ctrl+caret...
