Not sure about "easier" but certainly more flexible. Investigate
	o Convert Edit Code (QECCVTEC) API
	o Convert Edit Word (QECCVTEW) API
	o Edit (QECEDT) API

or the Edit (EDIT) MI instruction available via the edit_packed()  
function or the _EDITPD built-in.

There is probably example code somewhere on the Interweb for using  
these.
