Sorry Jim, but I couldn't agree less.

SQL has been around on the IBM i for decades and for probably 10 years, at least, has been the way IBM would prefer us to define the database and access it. As far as I know, SQL is the only area where any new development or performance enhancement is done, with DDS basically deprecated. IMO it's absolutely nuts to prioritise learning Python over SQL when you're an IBM i programmer (not least because you have to use SQL to access the database in Python anyway).

SQL isn't that hard to learn and is a hugely valuable investment of one's time given that it's pretty much the universal way to define and access databases. It also integrates beautifully into RPG so we have the best of both worlds. I really can't help thinking it's nothing short of negligent to have not learnt SQL by this time and I really don't understand the push back against it.

Tim.

SQL is anything but simple. For those of you that have spent the effort needed to learn it, sure, but it’s every bit as complicated to do what you refer to as simple as python, or HTTPAPI etc.. the difference is with HTTPAPI, I don’t need to learn an entirely new language (SQL) and simply consume those things I need.

I won’t argue the need to know SQL and I truly appreciate seeing the potential solutions in SQL, but when I try to decipher some of the examples, we’ll, that gets tougher.

I use very simple SQL all the time, but it’s a programming language I’m not prepared to spend the time to learn beyond my basic needs, whereas Python was so much like other languages I know already, that it was easy. I’m guessing there is a large percentage of the folks on the platform (with respect to SQL not Python) who would respond in a similar way.

May be because SQL is just too simple! No native I/O, no pointers ... 😉

...why on earth would you use some third-party library when it can be done easily with the tools that come with the machine though? Sometimes it seems people would rather spend ages fiddling with qhell, Python, curl, some third-party library etc. than learn to use SQL 🙂

Glad to see you say that Chris - there are days when I feel like I'm the only one who feels that way.

CLOB is a bad idea for zip files.
BLOB is better.

Also, you will want to look at what postman is doing for the http header.
You probably need to include some sort of authentication.

Personally, I'd use the HTTPAPI and just send the file that way. Not everything needs to be done with SQL.
