I've been trying to practice shutting up, but I want to jump in here:

Daniel wrote: "Not at all - IBM didn't provide a solution that had only a fraction of the depth of integration that RPG (or COBOL) and DDS display files had. And IBM changed course so many times, I have lost count."

I've been with the platform since 1997. At that time, PowerBuilder and Gupta were getting ready to yield to the Java era. And after the Java era, the API push on both the mainframe and the iSeries.

IBM's message has been consistent, and that message is consistent with what Andy Groves of Intel told us decades ago, and consistent with what we all know about our profession and the field we plow and harvest: Modernize. Reinvent yourself constantly. Keep moving, they're after you!

Yes, it would be sweet to doze under the lemon tree and let the world go by like a lazy river on a sunny summer afternoon. That's not what we do for a living, nor is it the environment in which our employers do business. Constant change, constant progress, is the norm. Those individuals and enterprises who let the world go by for years and decades eventually find themselves struggling, searching for a "solution", when the answer has been under their noses.

Questioning putting a web face on it in 2025? That question was answered a quarter of a century ago!

The tools are there. I do it. Everyone does it. Don't get caught like Milton in "Office Space" clutching fearfully your red stapler while they dismantle the cubicle walls around you!
