RE: Printer on the net -- WEB400

Actually, in this case, it means that the printer is running a socket 
server on port 515 that communicates using the LPD protocol, and is 
accessible from whereever your machine is.

First I see if I can ping and see a response from the target machine, but 
there are many reasons why the machine may not respond to an ICMP packet.

Often, I use telnet to see if I can open the socket.  With some protocols, 
for instance SMTP, you could actually do enough in telnet to run an entire 
session.  I would say that you are in reasonably good shape if you can just 
get the socket open on port 515.
