The concept of a "joblog" is WIDELY used on other platforms, such as the
zSeries running MVS, VM, VSE.

You're correct. There's no concept of a "joblog" on windows (or any
other platform I believe)
However, the joblog is only as good as the messages written into it. In
the past i5OS programs have been very flat. That is, there were the
lines of code you wrote, and then the operating system, and that's it.
The RPG programmer may have been good (usually not) at logging message,
but Rochester was very good. However, as time as progressed and we've
layered calls upon calls upon service program, upon imports, etc. Many
of our programs are now a long way away from the underlying operating
system. And most of the time that path does not write any entries into
the joblog. How often have you wondered how the program got to a
particular error point? Does the joblog actually help? I'd guess not.
Add to that the increased usage of java on i5OS and that too doesn't
support the joblog, so now you're even farther away from the joblog
being useful. Think you're likely to get anything useful out of the
joblog for a failed web request against Websphere running on i5OS? Think
again.
I'll grant that the joblog concept is very useful, the work management
is great on i5OS, no argument there. But as systems evolve it's becoming
less and less useful.
