I guess this is a Web topic because IBM's Cafes are web applications? Actually that makes me recall a lively debate a number of years ago between advocates of Web forums vs. Mailing Lists. I think it was on the MC Press web site, which hosted a forum.

It's interesting that Midrange Lists have been a lot more successful than web forums at SystemiNetwork, MC Press, and Ignite/400, and a couple reasons come to mind. First, Midrange Lists are not tied to a specific vendor - there's more independence - more objectivity. Second is that Mailing Lists offer individual control and local storage via personal email clients. Third, web based forum software running at most sites performs poorly in comparison to desktop email clients.
