I think the most important point in mailing lists versus forums is that you have to go and look on web forums actively. Email clients allows you to remain passive and let the information come to you.

This is also my main objection to the jt400 web forum at IBM. It is clearly a Notes database with a web frontend, but I cannot be allowed to synchronize the database (read only would be fine). Then I could keep an eye without having explicitly to go there.
