Interesting perspective ... that's not how I interpret GWT ... from what I can see, GWT is a way to build rich javascript applications that use AJAX ... but using Java as the language.

IMO, using GWT to learn Java would be quite confusing and a very mixed metaphor.

Now if you already knew Java, I would say GWT is a good way to create AJAX based applications.

Personally, I would suggest learning Java first by using Java ... then add the fancy layer of GWT.
