I would have to agree with David. GWT is not a language, but a library, so
learn the language first :-)

I would probably lean towards JSF (JavaServer Faces) since Oracle is big on
that technology anyway. Okay that's not why, but I would still lean towards
JSF because you're tied more directly with the Java technology. It's tagged
based so easier for a HTML coder to understand. Take a look at tapestry too
http://tapestry.apache.org/.

On the other hand I have heard very good things about GWT.
