Actually, GWT is a translator ... it converts java source into Javascript. From what little I've looked at it, it appears to be quite rich and well supported. There's an eclipse plug-in that includes a debugger (I think).

That said, I still think if you want to learn Java ... you should start with Java.

And, of course, a lot of people know my opinions of code generators.
