Reference by pointers doesn't mean RLA to me at all ...

That's odd. It seemed to me that that OODBMS might use RLA methods to reference serialized objects, like RPG uses RLA methods to reference serialized records - via pointers. RPG may read a record into an internal structure, while an OODBMS may de-serialize an object when "read". Oh well, that article seemed rather vague.
