I guess in the end I am mostly interested in business apps (ie forms with
business data back and forth from the data base), so I would agree that
streaming audio isn't really a good thing to measure. Though it does bring
up an interesting point - the reason it takes so much to render video or
audio in Flash is because they encrypt it in many cases in an effort to
protect the media from pirates I would guess. In the case of Pandora they
are actually downloading the encrypted stream, then decoding it to an MP4
document in the /tmp/ folder on my Linux machine. Why not just download the
MP4 document and skip the encryption piece - didn't take too long to find
where they were downloading it to. Does that make me a hacker? :-)

The CPU and memory imprint is my biggest complaint.

Chris Laffra from the EGL Rich UI team blogged (complained) about the CPU
and memory requirements of Flash:

To be fair, it seems that video streaming and playing is highly resource
intensive, no matter what player you use. But when I monitored the CPU and
memory use of a Flex-based application recently, I saw that the resource
requirements were comparable to a rich JavaScript client running under
Google Chrome.
