not acknowledged fast enough by the listening program.

That sounds like a good way of describing it. At any rate, socket connections
are dropped if all HTTP threads are occupied. That doesn't necessarily mean the
HTTP server is busy, or that a web application is busy. The client may simply
be holding a connection open. Or in the case of comet, an application may be
paused, waiting on a queue or something, while a persistent connection with a
client remains open.

That is interesting that Jetty, with the help of Netty, surpassed the 10K
connection limit that you see with Apache. In theory, you could have one giant
chat application with 100K participants with persistent connections.
