I hear you Peter. You are right - Net.Data does fit my criteria. Apparently nothing else comes as close. It is difficult to refrain from making religious arguments at this point.

Martin,

The Net.data solution was suggested because it appeared to fit the criteria of your request very well. (not withstanding that I am it's major proponent)
It should be noted that the IBM engineer responsible for the product still visits http://dtwdude.com to respond to some queries. (not withstanding that I built that site myself using PHP because nobody hosts Net.data)

I shall not presume to lecture you on the merits of other solutions as I have the impression that others before you have wilted from the plethora of erudite responses.
Except to say that the sample code I offered is about as simple as solutions get. Were your machine owner prepared to install Zend Server (it's free) I could offer the same script written almost as simply in PHP.

Good luck,
Peter

Thus it is demonstrated. QED

I am tired of going down dirt roads to nowhere. I was shocked to hear a comment the other day of "Now that Java is dying as a solution..." and no one disagreed.

There seems to be no consensus, and the solutions are piling up like driftwood on the beach.

I appreciate the discussion from everyone. Thank you all.

Peter, Thank you. I have been reading through the Net.Data pages. I
realize now that I have never looked at Net.Data. It is what I
believe I am looking for.

The IBM documentation I have found so far is not up to the usual high
standards set by IBM. Also I have heard little buzz about Net.Data
and that has me a bit worried.

But you are using it and like it so my bet is that it will do what I want.

Booth - I really think this is a bad idea for two reasons.

1) Why teach them a tool that is obsolete before they start? It is not supported on any other platform and has not been enhanced in eons. the only support for it used to come from www.ignite400.org but that site no longer exists - that alone should tell you something. having to use the wayback machine to find answers to questions is not goodness.

2) It is no more native than PHP. Both come with the box. But with PHP
you have hundreds of web sites, discussions groups, books, college
classes, etc. to help you learn. Plus PHP continues to evolve. Try
finding help with mobile apps written in Net.Data

By all means teach RPG based techniques but please don't waste people's time on a tool that is going nowhere. For those using Net.Data today it is fine to continue it - but it makes no sense for people starting from scratch.

If you want other alternatives Project WOW will give you the simple editable tables you want and that's free. Same for powerExt and Renaissance and ...
