IMO, it was about perceptions. Node is hot, so IBM wanted to be able to say "we can do that".

Doesn’t the JavaScript that runs in Node.JS also compile to machine language on the IBM i. I think that’s the point of the V8 engine.

Again, if node can’t perform better than CGI on the IBM i under the conditions for which node was designed, then it was pointless for IBM to bring node to the IBM i.
